In the unfortunate event that you are involved in a car accident there are a number of things you should do and shouldn’t do. Here are some useful tips:
Things to DO
- Take note of the registration of the other vehicle.
- Note the other person’s insurance details. You can get these from the insurance disc which should be displayed on their screen.
- Be polite but determined in your dealings with the other driver. In many cases, people can be in shock and may incorrectly give or take information to you.
- Report the accident to the Gardai. Depending on the severity of the accident, the Gardai may not attend the scene of the accident. In this case you should go to the nearest Garda Station and report the accident.
Things NOT TO DO
- Do not admit liability at the scene of the accident. In some cases your insurance policy could become invalidated if you admit liability at the scene of an accident.
- Do not leave the scene of the accident until you and the other driver have exchanged details.
In summary, if you are involved in an accident make sure you get the following details from the other person before leaving the scene.
- The full name and address of the other driver.
- The full name and address of the owner of the other vehicle if the driver does not own the car
- The name and address of the Insurance Company involved and the policy number.
- The expiry date of the policy.
